DESTINATION
Catania
Catania, the second largest city in Sicily, still retains many places to discover today. Catania is almost completely destroyed by the earthquake in 1693. From reconstruction to today, it has retained some of the most glorious buildings of the Baroque period in Sicily. In Piazza Duomo you can see the Elephant Fountain, a symbol of the city, a work by Vaccarini who was one of the main protagonists of the reconstruction of the city in the 18th century. The elephant carved in lava stone holds an Egyptian obelisk. The Cathedral and other churches are also evidence of the reconstruction in the Baroque period. Among the architectural remains from the period before the earthquake was the Ursino Castle, now home to the Civic Museum. The ancient ruins of the Roman theater and amphitheater, both built in lava stone, stand between some modern buildings. The Achilles Baths, on the other hand, are completely hidden from sight. to enter there is a door on the right side of the cathedral, which leads to large rooms.
